What should you know about bathroom remodeling here?
Bathrooms take the worst of Southeast Texas humidity. Steam, poor ventilation and a slow leak behind the tile add up to soft subfloor, stained sheetrock and loose tiles long before the room looks dated. Rocha's General Construction remodels bathrooms across the Golden Triangle and Jefferson County, Orange County and Hardin County: tub-to-shower conversions, full tile showers, vanities, flooring and walk-in baths for aging in place.
We build the part behind the tile as carefully as the part you see.
What goes into a bathroom remodel?
Upper Gulf Coast air is damp most of the year, and a bathroom concentrates it. The first thing we check in an older bath is the floor. In pier-and-beam houses across Beaumont, Orange and Port Arthur, years of water at the tub and toilet often rot the subfloor and sometimes the joists below. In slab homes, a crack in the slab can telegraph through tile. Either way, new tile laid over a bad base cracks again. We open it up, fix the structure, and start from a sound floor.
Waterproofing is the next thing. A tiled shower is not waterproof on its own. Grout and tile let moisture through, so the protection has to be behind them: a properly sloped shower pan with a waterproof membrane, cement board or foam board on the walls, and sealed seams and corners. Most leaking showers we tear out failed right here.
If your bath took water during Harvey in 2017 or Imelda in 2019 and was put back together in a hurry, it is worth a look behind the tile. Rushed rebuilds often skipped the membrane or closed up framing that was still damp.
Ventilation keeps the new room from growing the same problems as the old one. An exhaust fan vented outside, not into the attic, pulls the humidity out. Where a fan needs new wiring, a licensed electrician does that part.
Popular jobs in our area:
Tub-to-shower conversion. Take out a tub you do not use and put in a walk-in shower with a low curb or no curb, a bench and a niche.
Aging-in-place bath. Wider doorway, curbless or low-curb shower, blocking in the walls for grab bars, comfort-height toilet, slip-resistant floor tile and a handheld shower.
Full remodel. New layout, double vanity, tile floor and shower, new lighting and mirrors.
Hall bath update. New vanity, toilet, tub surround, floor and paint on a tighter budget.
Plumbing changes, like moving a drain or valve, and all new electrical circuits are done by licensed plumbers and electricians. We coordinate with licensed trades and schedule inspections before the walls close.
Many homes in Beaumont and Port Arthur were built before 1978 and may have lead paint on trim and doors. We talk through that before demolition. If you find mold behind old tile, that is a job for a licensed mold professional, not us.

Materials and methods
Cement board and foam backer board, liquid and sheet waterproofing membrane, pre-sloped or mortar shower pans, porcelain and ceramic tile, thinset and grout, grab bar blocking, vanities and tops, low-curb shower bases, subfloor plywood, wet saw, laser level, moisture meter, dust barriers.
How does a bathroom remodel run?
We start at the house, look at the bath and the floor underneath if we can reach it, and talk about how you use the room.
You get a written estimate with fixed costs and allowances for tile, fixtures and vanity.
After selections are made and materials are ordered, we demo to the studs and subfloor.
Framing and floor repairs come next, then rough plumbing and electrical by the licensed trades, then inspections.
We build the shower pan, set backer board, waterproof, and tile. Then vanity, top, toilet, glass, trim and paint.
Final connections by the trades, a water test, and a walkthrough with you.
Permits and inspections
Does a bathroom remodel need a permit?
A bathroom remodel needs a permit when it moves plumbing, changes the layout, or adds electrical work, and that trade work is done by the licensed trades it requires. New tile, a new vanity or a tub-to-shower swap on the same drain often does not. We tell you which applies to your bathroom before demo starts.
In Jefferson and Chambers counties, roof, window, door and addition work can also need a Texas Department of Insurance windstorm inspection during the job.
